The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome is the definitive handbook for anyone affected by Asperger's syndrome (AS). Now including a new introduction explaining the impact of DSM-5 on the diagnosis and approach to AS, it brings together a wealth of information on all aspects of the syndrome for children through to adults.Drawing on case studies and personal accounts from Attwood's extensive clinical experience, and from his correspondence with individuals with AS, this book is both authoritative and extremely accessible. Chapters examine: * causes and indications of the syndrome * the diagnosis and its effect on the individual * theory of mind * the perception of emotions in self and others * social interaction, including friendships * long-term relationships * teasing, bullying and mental health issues * the effect of AS on language and cognitive abilities, sensory sensitivity, movement and co-ordination skills * career development. There is also an invaluable frequently asked questions chapter and a section listing useful resources for anyone wishing to find further information on a particular aspect of AS, as well as literature and educational tools.Essential reading for families and individuals affected by AS as well as teachers, professionals and employers coming in contact with people with AS, this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who needs to know or is interested in this complex condition.'I usually say to the child, "Congratulations, you have Asperger's syndrome", and explain that this means he or she is not mad, bad or defective, but has a different way of thinking.'- from The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome

Book The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome Review :

This book has illuminated answers to a whole world of questions I had been uncomfortably living with for some time now. I am the partner to a man on the spectrum who has recently received a diagnosis as an adult. There were many frustrating conversations and nights that would cause me significant emotional turmoil before his diagnosis. In those moments this book (along with a couple others) was an irreplaceabley valuable tool to help me sort through tangled perspectives and emotions in order to glean some insight on what the true nature of the conflict was at the time. It continues to be a helpful personal tool for me in navigating inevitable rocky relationship moments without invalidating my feelings or somehow vilifying my partner. Further understanding differences in perception and perspective helps to mitigate and avoid conflicts so I am very grateful and owe many thanks to the author Tony Atwood for his passive saving of my relationship and for the inspiration to seek a diagnosis that has positively changed the quality of my partner's life. Thank you ❤
I have been different than everyone else my entire life. It wasn't until age 35 that I was diagnosed with Autism. That was preceded by ~ 2 years of personal research, which included this book. This book was the big piece. You have to go back just a tad to understand this. Asperger's Syndrome is no longer in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the "guide" the medical profession uses to diagnose people with disorders like Autism). This means that Asperger's is no longer an in use diagnosis. No one going to a psychologist, psychiatrist, etc. will be diagnosed with this at current.People who formerly met the diagnostic criteria for Asperger's will now be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This will most likely a diagnosis called Autism Spectrum Disorder without Accompanying Intellectual Impairment. This is just something done for the convenience of the psychiatric community, in my view. Cobble everything up under one diagnostic spectrum. In other words, instead of having 2 disorders- Asperger's and Autism, have a single spectrum called Autism. For you and I, this means nothing. That is why this book is still pure gold. If you have a family member with high functioning Autism (meaning they are able to live independently, and/or do well in some or all of their academic subjects, or do not have an IQ less than 70, like most people with Autism) or you suspect they have it, this book will enlighten you. I felt like it was written about me the entire time I was reading it.
